Characteristics of synthetic teak

Synthetic teak is a material specifically developed as an alternative to natural teak for use on boat decks and other exterior surfaces. It is primarily composed of polymers such as PVC or EVA, engineered to replicate the appearance and texture of natural teak while offering enhanced durability (including greater resistance to saltwater, UV radiation, and moisture), easier maintenance, and reduced weight. Thanks to these properties, along with easier installation and customizable aesthetics, synthetic teak is widely used in the construction of yachts, sailboats, and both recreational and commercial vessels.

Cleaning and maintenance of synthetic teak surfaces

Unlike natural teak, synthetic teak does not require sanding, varnishing, or regular cleaning and sealing treatments to maintain its appearance, which significantly reduces surface maintenance tasks. However, due to its increasingly widespread use in the nautical sector, especially in high-traffic areas such as decks and swim platforms it requires specific cleaning protocols. As a synthetic material, it has a strong tendency to attract oil-based dirt (such as vegetable oils, engine oils, or sunscreen), making removal difficult, particularly when not cleaned immediately. Synthetic teak is a polymeric material that, although less porous than natural wood, has microtextures, surface roughness, and a certain capacity to absorb oily organic compounds. The adhesion of oils and other non-polar compounds worsens over time and with sun exposure, causing surface diffusion of oily molecules into the polymer matrix and consequently creating a persistent stain. As these stains are absorbed into the polymer structure of the material, they are difficult to remove with conventional detergents. The use of related organic solvents is also not suitable, as they may discolour, attack, or damage the synthetic teak surface.
